  • Tips On Hydraulic Pumps (1) : Cavitation

    Cavitation

    When hydraulic fluid flows through a system, an increase in flow velocity creates low-pressure zones.  The gases dissolved in the hydraulic fluid then form bubbles, creating cavities.  When these cavities travel into high-pressure zones, they are suddenly compressed, generating localized extreme pressure that strikes material surfaces, causing abnormal vibration and noise, and eroding the material.  This phenomenon of cavity formation is known as cavitation.  The severity of cavitation varies depending on the amount of gas dissolved in the hydraulic fluid, changes in fluid flow velocity, and fluid viscosity.  When cavitation occurs in a pump, pump efficiency decreases, and output flow is reduced.  The most effective ways to prevent cavitation are to increase the diameter of the inlet port to prevent air ingestion, reduce filter resistance, and improve the pump's suction capacity.

    Nearly 70% of hydraulic pump damage is caused by contamination, such as dirt or foreign particles entering the hydraulic system.  Most problems can be prevented by removing contaminants and regularly cleaning or replacing the filters.  Proper maintenance can help reduce repair costs and minimize downtime.  If abnormal conditions occur, stop operation immediately and contact us for technical assistance.

    • Pipe diameter too small or clogged
    • Hydraulic fluid contaminated with excessive air or moisture
    • Fluid filter clogged with contaminants or with too fine a mesh rating
    • Excessively high oil viscosity may cause the pump to draw in air; excessively low oil viscosity may cause the pump to overheat
    • Improper fluid inlet position or insufficient fluid supply

    Wear and Tear of Hydraulic Components

    • Worn or damaged gears
    • Worn shaft or bearing

    Improper Installation

    • Pump shaft misaligned with motor shaft
